After a few years respite we returned to Mazzotta's Restaurant in Middletown, CT. From past visits, I remembered and anticipated good, wholesome, Italian food at reasonable prices. The food was as expected: the ziti with garlic and oil, the chicken parmesan, and the spaghetti with meatball were all as wonderfully tasty as anticipated. Unfortunately, most of the entree portions we tried were meager considering the prices. Garden salads were served as if they were prized offerings despite the fact that they were embarrassingly small. The bread basket contained a skimpy portion of very thinly sliced, air filled bread. To be served this quality bread in a bakery/Italian restaurant is a shame. The zita plate was pitifully small with very little oil or garlic but at least the pasta was served al dente. Likewise the spaghetti dish, although I must admit the one meatball was about tennis ball size. The chicken parmesan was somewhat of an exception in that it consisted of a rather large portion of chicken generously covered with sauce and cheese but disappointingly served with a token portion of spaghetti and sauce. Admitedly, a better balance would have had the chicken portion a bit smaller with less cheese and the pasta serving could have been a bit larger. As this was a very early 4:00 p.m. Saturday "lupper" as my daughter dubbed it, we did not splurge on dessert. Which probably was a mistake since Mazzotta's is a bakery/restaurant. Maybe the next we visit Middletown, we'll skip the meager Italian entrees and grab some dessert instead. |
